Drinks in Cambridge and Film Screening with the Director

Not to jinx the wonderful spring day, but we’re thrilled the mercury hit 71º (22ºc) in London today. And now the weather is getting nicer and the days longer, we want to take advantage.

First up, join us at a Cambridge beer garden this Saturday, May 14. After London, Cambridge has the second most alumni, so we’re excited to finally host an event there. And we’ll be joined by Dr. Nathan Holbert, an Associate Professor of Communication, Media, and Learning Technologies Design at Teachers College. If you’re in London, and haven’t had an excuse to visit Cambridge, now's your chance. Only an hour from St. Pancras railway station.

On May 18th, we have award-winning documentary filmmaker and LGBTQ community activist Dante Alencastre CC’83 in London for a screening of his latest documentary film, AIDS DIVA: The Legend of Connie Norman (2021), about the late trans, AIDS activist, and ACT UP LA spokesperson, Connie Norman.

Looking for opportunities to be active, enjoy the weather, and be social (and Covid safe), we’re going to walk different sections of the Jubilee Walkway in central London. More details below.

One last thing, we only send out a newsletter, at most, once a month so we don’t flood your inboxes. However, we have lots of activities, news, and events coming up so please be sure to follow us the social media channel of your choice. Or our exclusive members only Slack team where you can stay up to date and meet and network with alumni.

As always, if you need to reach us, you can email [email protected].

We hope to see you soon,

Courtney and Stephen

AIDS DIVA: The Legend of Connie Norman (2021) + Director Q&A | May 18 @ 18:45

Trailblazing trans and ACT UP activist of the 80s and 90s, Connie Norman’s life and work was defiantly queer and intersectional, describing herself as an ‘’ex-drag queen, ex-hooker, ex-IV drug user, ex-high risk youth and current post-operative transsexual woman who is HIV positive.’ Director and Columbia College alumni, Dante Alencastre’s film is a celebratory reappraisal of Norman life and activism, from marrying a gay interior designer, joining the radical fairies to taking on right-wing talk show hosts, all with her distinctive wit, wisdom and tenacity.

The film will be followed by a Q+A with the film’s director and Andria Mordaunt from ACT UP London. The Q&A will include a BSL interpreter.

Tickets for the event can be purchased on the Rio Cinema website HERE.

June Events:

Jubilee Walkway: The City Loop

The Jubilee Walkway consists of five circular sections and includes some of London's most iconic landmarks. We’ll actually begin with Section 3, The City Loop, a short circular walk around the heart of the city and only 2 miles (3 km). After two years of lockdown and an inactive winter, we’ll start easy.

We’ll end at a local pub and anyone not able to join for the walk, can join for a pint.

Date and time TBD but stay tuned.
