Happy Holidays and 2018 Events

courtney-stephen-Low-steps.jpg

We hope everyone had a wonderful and restful holiday. As 2017 draws to a close, we wanted to take a moment to reflect on the last 12 months. First, we want to give special thanks to our outgoing President, Maria Shiao (SEAS 1986), who helped breathe life back into the club. Her tireless dedication has laid a strong foundation on which we will continue to build. As your incoming President (Courtney Cesari, CC ‘04) and Vice President (Stephen Elms, SoA ‘08) we are honored to continue to contribute to the CUCL legacy. In October, we had the privilege of returning to Morningside and participating in the Columbia Alumni Leaders Weekend (CALW). Over the span of a few days we met other club leaders from around the globe, exchanged ideas, and formed bonds. London (along with all of the UK) has the unique distinction of being the largest cluster of alumni outside of the US. As you can imagine, organizing and managing a club of over 4,000 members is a large undertaking. And that’s why we are so dependent on our community of volunteers. So as you welcome 2018, please consider your New Year's resolution to be more active with the club. For some that will be helping plan an event or activity (volunteers are always welcome). For other, it will be simply showing up at a few events. But be involved! You are a student at Columbia for a brief moment, but a Columbia alumni forever.

If we haven’t met already, please introduce yourself at a future event.

Wishing you a very happy and roaring New Year!

Events Roundup

Open Board Meeting

Special thanks to all who attended our 2017’s Open Board Meeting (especially to those who took the time to call in from the US or elsewhere). Joining the existing Executive team were about a dozen new volunteers who are newly appointed to assist with Young Alumni, Arts Access, CVC (Columbia Venture Community). We have a few events in the pipeline together with Columbia Business School, SIPA, and focused around energy, journalism, Lunar New Year. As always, please feel free to be in touch with Club leadership with ideas, requests and feedback.

Annual Holiday Party

The roulette wheel spun, the holiday tunes were on repeat, and the prosecco flowed. Our evening at the Hippodrome Casino was a great kickoff to the month of December, aka holiday party season. The Roulette Learn-to-Play table gave CUCL a risk-free way to play black and red in the same space where Audrey Hepburn received a BAFTA, and performers have included (but are not limited to) Charlie Chaplin, Harry Houdini, and Prince. We look forward to enjoying future events at the Hippodrome Casino’s expansive and historical space.

The Art of Sanctions: A View from the Field | Wednesday January 17

With Richard Nephew, Senior Research Scholar and Program Director at the Center on Global Energy Policy, Columbia University and former Principal Deputy Coordinator for Sanctions Policy at the US State Department.

When & Where:

While sanctions have become a preferred tool used by Western policymakers to respond to international security threats, their effectiveness is often challenged. To achieve foreign policy aims, sanctions must consider the role of business and industry, and adapt to the tactics used by targets to evade sanctions. In his latest book, Richard Nephew draws on lessons learnt from past sanctions regimes and provides a practical framework for how sanctions can be designed, implemented and adapted with greater success.
