September News and Upcoming Events

The ancient Romans called the hottest, most humid days of summer diēs caniculārēs or dog days. Perhaps as our reward for surviving them, London has now blessed us with brief rains and even some breezes.

On one of the warmest days in August, the Lions (pictured above) were out in force during the 1st Annual US Alumni Field Day in Wimbledon. A fiercely contested afternoon, CUCL placed 2nd after a nail biting round of flip cup to decide the winner (after crushing Georgetown in rounders, Harvard in volleyball and Stanford/Princeton in bocce).

Whilst the weather is still great, join us for outdoor volleyball on sandy courts with other Ivies, our next happy hour in the biergarten of a Hackney brewery, and a family friendly walking tour around the City of London.

We’ll plan enough indoor events in the coming months (including Columbia Connects and our annual Holiday Party; see below), so share the outdoors with CUCL this September. We even have a few spots left for CUCL’s version of Under the Tuscan Sun—an exclusive wine tasting weekend at the Poderi di Capo d’Uomo Estate.

As always, more is in the works, so stay tuned and be sure to follow us on  webpage, facebook and instagram.

Please also keep in touch. We’d love to get feedback on events you’ve attended, or the types of activities you’d like the club to plan. Reach out at [email protected]

Enjoy the Bank Holiday this Monday, and we'll see you soon!

CVC Roundtable: Starting an Entrepreneurial Journey

The newly re-launched Columbia Venture Club (CVC) is growing strong as their second event sold out.  The event was an informal and engaging round table happy hour where participants networked and discussed topics centred around the theme of “starting an entrepreneurial journey.”  It was great to meet so many new members and learn about their entrepreneurial interests and stages of their journeys so that we can create appropriate and meaningful events as we move forward and continue to build the Columbia Alumni Entrepreneurship scene here in London.

Arts Access: American Moor at Shakespeare’s Globe

cucl-2018_jul_Jun_Happy_hour.png

CUCL enjoyed a powerful 85-minutes at Sam Wanamaker Theatre at Shakespeare's Globe. The solo play, written and performed by African-American actor, Keith Hamilton-Cobb, opened the door to a crucial dialogue examining the experience and perspective of black men in America through the metaphor of William Shakespeare’s character, Othello.

During the post-show discussion (moderated by Michael Witmore, Director of Folger Shakespeare Library) one audience member called it, “the most important night at the theatre he’d ever had.” After the performance, a wine reception was hosted to celebrate the work. A big thank you to director Kim Weild (SoA ‘07) for letting us be part of the evening.
