October News and Upcoming Events

The mercury is dropping, the leaves are changing, and the birds are flying south. Autumn has arrived.

We want to thank everyone who came to one of our many summer events. We had a packed few months with old and new faces participating in Field Day, happy hours, walking tours, theatre performances, and tennis to name a few.

If you joined us, we hope you had fun and we’ll see you again. If you’ve still not found an excuse to meet fellow Columbians here in London, we hope this fall we have something for you. We’re starting off with Arts Access: Frieze Art Fair (tickets on sale now) followed by our monthly happy hour on the 9th of October with the US Alumni Club. Later in the moth, Holliday Associate Professor of Real Estate Patrice Derrington will be visiting London and presenting Urban Property Development: Form, Finance and the Future followed by a panel discussion.

Looking past October, we have Columbia Connects, more tennis, and one of our most popular events, the holiday party.

As always, more is in the works, so stay tuned and check our webpage and be sure to follow us on facebook and instagram.

Please also keep in touch. We’d love to get feedback on events you’ve attended, or the types of activities you’d like the club to plan. Reach out at [email protected]

USA College Day London "The Fulbright Fair"

There will be 4,500 students attending the USA College Day London "The Fulbright Fair" next weekend, which exceeds initial expectations and means we need extra hands at the Columbia University table. We need alumni volunteers during the following times:

  • 3:30 - 5:30 pm on Fri, 28 Sept: one member
  • 5:30 - 7:30 pm on Fri, 28 Sept: two members
  • 12:30 - 3:00 pm, on Sat, 29 Sept: two members

You will be joining other CUCL member already staffing the booth. If you can help, please email Helene Tagliaferri at [email protected] and let her know. Thanks!

Here’s what you (may have) missed:

City of London Walking Tour

Our Walking Tour attendees can now stroll proudly through the Square Mile with a more educated perspective, thanks to our trusted guide Federica. Starting back on the very edges of the boundaries, of what was originally considered the city of London, we explored the Tower of London, the Barbican, the Cheesgrater, and the Gherkin with one of the longest stops taking place in front of the new Bloomberg building. Tour attendees included not only a Bloomberg building employee, but also a Foster architect who gave us an inside scoop on the site—did you know Michael Bloomberg made the intentional choice to keep the building low out of respect to his City neighbors even though he was zoned and approved for a skyscraper?

Many thanks to Federica and the Architecture Foundation for the insight and education!

Intra-Ivy Beach Volleyball

While the weather didn’t exactly cooperate, that didn’t stop the brave Columbia and Yale alumni representatives who showed up to play on Saturday. Yes we had a few showers, but we also had a great match at a hidden sand court outdoors in the center of the city, minutes away from Borough Market. The competition was fierce, but our Lions bested the Bulldogs in the end before the group moved to an indoor pub to celebrate.
