March and April Events

Congratulations! If you are reading this email we assume you survived the Beast from the East. Now that London roads have cleared and the TFL is back running as smoothly as it ever does, please fill up your calendar with the wealth of CUCL events we have in store for the next six weeks. A private studio visit, an entrepreneurial breakfast, a Columbia Professor from the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory is in town and of course, several Happy Hours. Read on and register away!

March / April Events

Arts Access Studio Visit: Miles Aldridge | Tuesday March 13 7:15pm

Please join this rare opportunity open exclusively to CUCL, to have an intimate chat with the iconic British photographer Miles Aldridge (who has works in the permanent collection of The British Museum, The National Portrait Gallery and The Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and the International Centre of Photography in New York) and explore his works over a talk and drinks in his studio. The evening will provide a much needed respite from the gray weather with a talk on the dynamic and vibrant works by the artist himself. 

Works will be available for purchase if you so wish.

Public Speaking Workshop with LBS | Wednesday March 14 7:00pm

In cooperation with the London Business School Public Speaking Club, this session is designed to introduce you to key skills that will help you deliver more engaging presentations and speeches for all occasions, personal and professional. This event is open to all Columbia alumni and the LBS Community. The workshop is facilitated by Sammy Engele, the LBS Student-led Initiatives Manager, co-president of LBS Public Speaking Club and an experienced member of Toastmasters International of Communication, Public Speaking and Leadership.

The event is free to attend, but registration is required.

Young Alumni Mixer | Thursday March 15 6:30pm

Join CUCL's Young Alumni Committee as we team up for a mixer of sorts with with the Stanford Club of Great Britain's recent graduates for after work drinks at the Reverend JW Simpson. The Reverend JW Simpson is a cosy cocktail bar in Fitzrovia with a quirky design, offering an insight into the life of the former inhabitant - Reverend of the parish of Fitzrovia, who occupied the flat until 1986 and apparently wasn’t a stranger to the odd tipple.

US Alumni Club Quiz Night | Thursday March 22 7:00pm

We still have spots open to cheerlead for the Quiz Night team when we will face other University Clubs (e.g. Boston College, Dartmouth, Duke, Northwestern, etc.) in a test of wit regarding common general knowledge, sports, history, including a round of Americana. More than the cash prize, it’s our club pride on the line. Cheerleading ticket includes 1 drink.

Alan Howard JW3 Speaker Series: Jeremy Irons & Tania Bryer | March 26 7:30pm

You are cordially invited to an evening with Jeremy Irons, star of Godspell, The Lion King, Die Hard, The Man Who Knew Infinity, and British Television broadcaster,Tania Bryer, presenter and executive producer of the critically-acclaimed series CNBC Meets, as they discuss Jeremy’s illustrious film and stage career. Thanks to the generous support of Alan Howard (CC Parent '19 & '21), a limited number of discounted tickets are made available to CUCL. CUCL / MIT Mixer | Wednesday March 28 7:00pm

Come brave the (heated) rooftop bar of the Hippodrome Casino, home to not only London's largest casino, but also historic performances from Shirley Bassey, Judy Garland, Sammy Davis Jr, The Jackson 5 and Tom Jones, to name a few. The Havana Club Terrace will be a private space to alumni, students and associates from MIT and Columbia Universities for the evening, with a cash bar on hand.

Open Board Meeting | Monday April 9 7:00pm

Following on the success from January and continues interest from volunteers (thanks!) we are holding our next Open Board meeting. For volunteers eager to get involved further with the Club (whether through donating time, resources, ideas, space) we welcome you. Come for the night to share thoughts, meet the Board and get in on the planning. While showing up to events and meeting Club leadership is the most direct way to get involved we know it’s not possible for everyone to make it so please feel free to be in touch with Club leadership with ideas, requests and feedback.

Professor Richard Seager | Monday April 16 7:00pm

We are lucky to have the Palisades Geophysical Institute/Lamont Research Professor at the Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia in town for an evening. With specialities in climate variability and the changing of seasons, Professor Seager is on hand to answer all of your questions and teach how climate change will impact the world.
