Breuer ’80CC, ’84SIPA, ’85LAW, former Assistant Attorney General for the Criminal Division. Together, they will discuss pressing legal and social issues shaping today’s world, followed by a Q&A session and a reception with drinks and canapés.

This initiative enriches Columbia University’s undergraduate experience by sponsoring courses, public events, student internships, and fellowships that explore contemporary civil and political rights issues in the spirit of Columbia’s Core Curriculum.

Eric H. Holder Jr. CC’73, LAW’76 served as the 82nd Attorney General of the United States in the administration of fellow Columbia alumnus President Barack Obama CC’83. His leadership was marked by a commitment to ensuring equal justice under the law, protecting civil rights, and fostering trust in government. Holder was the third longest-serving attorney general and the first African-American to hold the office.
A distinguished alumnus, Holder received Columbia College’s John Jay Award for distinguished professional achievement in 1996 and the Hamilton Alumni Medal, the College’s highest honor, in 2015. Since 2017, he has led the Eric H. Holder Jr. Initiative for Civil and Political Rights at Columbia University, which supports undergraduate courses, public events, internships, and fellowships that advance the understanding of civil and political rights in a contemporary context. His ongoing connection to Columbia underscores his dedication to educating and inspiring future generations of leaders.
Lanny A. Breuer ’80CC, ’84SIPA, ’85LAW was Assistant Attorney General for the Criminal Division from 2009 to 2013 and is recognized as one of the nation’s most influential lawyers. He has served as special counsel to President Clinton and is widely respected for his leadership in criminal law enforcement.
