Here’s what you (may have) missed:
Arts Access Studio Visit: Miles Aldridge
CUCL had an exclusive studio visit with the iconic British photographer Miles Aldridge whose vibrant works are in the permanent collection of the V&A, National Portrait Gallery and have been exhibited worldwide. Over drinks and nibbles, the Alumni had a guided tour of Miles' works by the acclaimed artist himself. This provided a rich insight into his creative process and philosophical inspirations. We began with a preview of with his latest photographic series, continued with works exhibited at his solo at the Somerset House and moved to works with Carousel props exhibited at the Tate which were a response to Gertler's work made in 1916. Overall the Alumni had a stimulating and engaging evening meeting new Alums and having an intimate chat with the ever friendly Miles over some great Italian wine! We even had a book signing session with limited edition publications. Watch the newsletter for more such events.
Public Speaking Workshop with LBS
The public speaking workshop took place at London Business School’s main campus and was designed to introduce public speaking skills to CUCL and LBS EMBA students. Throughout a three part session attendees learned about delivering engaging speeches, impromptu speeches, and a prepared speech. All speeches were evaluated by Sammy Engele, the LBS Student-led Initiatives Manager, co-president of LBS Public Speaking Club and an experienced member of Toastmasters International of Communication, Public Speaking and Leadership expert, who shared tips on improving delivery.
After the workshop, the networking drinks were held at the Windsor Castle, also the location for this month’s Happy Hour.
US Alumni Club Quiz Night
An improvement upon last year’s fifth place tie, this year CUCL tied for fourth place! Major credit to our own Suresh Jones who single-handedly beat every other American University (including Duke, Vanderbilt and UT Austin) in a bonus round chugging contest. Not only did this help us finish as the top Ivy present (here’s looking at you Penn) but earned us bragging rights for the next year. Already looking forward to next year’s competition. If we can wait that long…
Alan Howard JW3 Speaker Series: Jeremy Irons & Tania Bryer
It’s not every Monday night that you get to share a glass of wine with an Academy Award winner, but the lucky few who attended the latest of Alan Howard’s Speaker Series did just that. British Television and CNBC’s Tania Bryer interviewed the Oscar, Tony Award, and Emmy winner, Jeremy Irons. Currently starring in Long Day’s Journey Into the Night (but perhaps more familiarly known as the voice of Scar in Disney's The Lion King). Irons provided candid, insightful conversation and inspired much laughter. As always, thanks to the generous support of Alan Howard (CC Parent '19 & '21).
