CUCL News with February and March Events

Hoping this letter finds you warm and well during what is turning out to be a blustery, rainy new year. For those dedicated, mad, individuals braving Dry January or the even more strict Vegan-uary, may this letter provide you opportunities to indulge again at our February and March events. We look forward to our Annual Lunar New Year celebrations (Gong Hey Fat Choy!) and to crushing the competition at the Annual US Alumni Quiz Night. We have much in store this year including Columbia Professors traveling over and graciously arranging to speak for CUCL, our annual Arts Access events like Photo London and Frieze, new volunteering / mentoring opportunities, closer cooperation and mixers with other University Alumni Clubs, a freshly formed Young Alumni brand of the Club and much more. We cannot stress enough that this Club is yours, so please get in touch with ideas, feedback, or just show up

Happy New Year! At the very last moment it can be considered appropriate.

Events Roundup

The Art of Sanctions: A View from the Field

With Richard Nephew, Senior Research Scholar and Program Director at the Center on Global Energy Policy, Columbia University and former Principal Deputy Coordinator for Sanctions Policy at the US State Department.

In the very appropriate setting of the RUSI library, Richard Nephew presented his latest book and shared a sanctions framework, informed by years of experience in the State Department, and in particular during the Obama administration. From historical sanctions in Latin America, or even prior to WWII, to more recent cases (Iran, Russia), sanctions have evolved to an ever more complex decision making environment that needs proper resources. This was followed by a very lively Q&A (thanks to the highly specialised audience) on current situations (North Korea, Venezuela, …) where both author and public shared very interesting points of view.

CUCL Young Alumni Happy Hour

This past weekend CUCL’s first young alumni drinks took place at The Old Queen’s Head in Angel. The evening held a great show of enthusiasm complete with new friends and long-lost friends re-surfaced. Watch this space as we plan further events in the next few months, both with even more Columbia young alumni and cooperating with other US universities. For any questions or to get involved with young alumni events specifically, get in touch with Maximilian Mancini, CC’16.
